How we anchor our inflatables and what surfaces we can install on.
As RPII licenced operators, we have been trained on how to install and operate our inflatables in accordance with BSEN 14960
Indoors on carpet/hard surfaces
We use 2-4 x 20kg sand bags which are attached the the inflatables anchor points with D rings. Although sand bags are not legally required for indoor hires, it is good practice to as it helps to prevent the inflatables from moving out of posistion when in use.
Outdoor hires
We are a 90% indoor hirer, however during April-Sept we have a small selection of infatables we allow for outdoor hire. This is very much weather dependant and we will cancel bookings if heavy, persistant rain is forecast or the wind speeds (inc gusts) are above the safe limit (19mph is our company policy).
Inflatables have at least 6 anchor points, all of which must be in good working order. When outside, the inflatable shall be secured to the ground using all of the anchor points, with 380mm long x 16mm diameter stakes where ground conditions allow ie real grass.
Each anchor point and all of the anchorage components shall withstand a force of 1600newtons. The direction of force shall be at an angle off the ground of 30-45 degrees. Ground stakes shall incline away from the direction of the exerted force. No more than 25mm of the stake should protrude from the ground.
On hard standing where stakes cannot be used, the inflatable shall secured to the ground with an equal method eg attaching to anchor points in the ground or using ballasts/weights that will support a 1600 N load.
1600 N is the equivalent to 163kg and applies to each of the inflatables anchor points. A standard size bouncy castle has 6-8 anchor points which equates to over a tonne in weight required to anchor safely.
For this reason we do not and cannot use sand bags outside as it is not possible to bring over a tonne of sand to any event. Any other company who uses sand bags alone will not following HSE rules and will be putting childrens lives at risk as the inflatable could tip over or be blown away. IT IS NOT WORTH THE RISK.
Outdoors on real grass
We use 380mm steel stakes on each anchor point. It is important that you make our staff aware of any possible electric or water works that could be within 380mm of the grounds surface to prevent any damage. Most households supplies are well within this limit anyway but just to be aware.

Outdoors on artificial grass
We do not install inflatables on this surface as we cannot secure the inflatable in accordance with the regulations (see above)
Outdoors on concrete
For concrete installations, we drill down into the surface 180mm and use 10mm thunderbolts with steel washers on every anchor point (each castle has at least 6). After the event we will fill up the holes with sand. We will need written permission from the land owner for this type of installation. There is also a £5 extra surcharge too.

Outdoors on tarmac
Unfortunatley tarmac is too soft to support 1600 N of force so therefore we cannot install on this surface.
Outdoors on gravel/stones/slate
Due to risk of damage to our inflatables and not being able to secure safely we are unable to install on this surface.
Outdoors on paving slabs/paviors
The only method of installing on this surface would be with sandbags and because 163kg is required on each anchor point we are unable to do so (see above in red)
